The Vampire Diaries Review: Break on Through

You guys: I didn’t like this episode. It didn’t work for me. That doesn’t mean that there weren’t some really great moments; there were, but most of the episode just sort of fell flat to me. It’s mostly because I don’t think Sage is all that great of a character and well, I don’t really feel Bonnie and her mother’s storyline as well. The only thing that saved the storyline involving Abby was Caroline and how she related to the situation.  However, the stuff with Alaric? That stuff with great, absolutely great and I kind of wish it had taken up more of the episode.

Let’s start with Sage, shall we? I love Cassidy Freeman. I think she is a great actress but man even she can’t pull off this Sage character. The problem is that she’s been introduced as Damon’s Lexi and I think that built up the expectations of her character a little too high. She is the exact opposite of Lexi, in that she is not at all caring; she is manipulative. She is set up to be this sort of bad-ass like Katherine but she’s not in any way shape or form. And worst of all, she’s in love with the mama’s boy Original who is also suicidal. Girl you can do WAY better.

I also don’t like when TVD is easy to figure out and Sage’s manipulation of Damon was apparent from the start. We had learned last week, from Rebekah that Sage was in love with Finn so it wasn’t surprising in the least that she was going to try and find a way to make sure that he didn’t die. Sage uses Damon’s suspicions of Rebekah (who, by the way, is always up to something, so why is this a new thing?) to find out why she has been so interested in the land of Mystic Falls. They use Rebekah through partying, sex, and awkward threesomes so that Sage is able to read her mind. They find out that there is another white oak tree in Mystic Falls and Damon’s family has records of where it might be. The twist is that it’s the Wickery Bridge.  So Sage and Rebekah burn it. But Damon is smart and finds the sign which was made from the same tree! Clever!!! Not….see what I mean about predictability?

Then there was the Abby storyline. The only thing that saved this story was Caroline, whose role in the story made the most sense. We barely got a chance to know Bonnie’s mother before she was turned into a vampire.  They really didn’t build Abby up all that well before hand either, not like with Caroline and her father. So when Abby is turned, the emotional scenes with Bonnie don’t really seem all that earned. They seem forced. The only scenes that weren’t forced were the ones with Bonnie forgiving Elena and Caroline lecturing Abby about what it means to be a parent. I just feel like there was such a huge missed opportunity here because we know Kat Graham can act, so why don’t they give her material that shows that off?

While all that other stuff was happening, some pretty damn fascinating stuff was happening with Alaric. This plot pained me in a good way. Who knew that Alaric descending into serial killer madness would have been one of the best things to happen to him? Yes, I want them to be able to cure him because I absolutely LOVE Alaric but man, seeing him go all Psycho killer on Meredith and almost on Elena was amazing. Matt Davis is going such a great job selling us on Alaric’s descent into madness. I believed every single one of his facial changes and actions. That opening scene in the CAT scan? Damn right horrifying and compelling.

I just hope that Bonnie’s magic was enough and that if it isn’t; they can find a way to bring him back from the edge.  I was also glad that this plot was a great way to reintroduce Jeremy back to the story, that no matter where he is, this supernatural stuff is ALWAYS going to find him; even if he doesn’t know it. Or does he? He seemed a little TOO happy if you asked me. That’s gotta be a warning sign, right? Right???

It will be interesting to see where things go next week and into the last third of the season. This is the first time in this series where I really don’t have a clue as to how this season is going to end but I have faith that this show will pull it off well. Klaus is back next week, so that should be good and my guess is that we haven’t seen the last of Meredith or Jeremy so that makes me happy!

Other thoughts:

~I love Meredith now. Can we kill of Sage and keep her? PLEASE!! I never thought I’d see the day that Torrey DeVitto played a nice, non-psychotic, character!!! I LOVE IT!

~ “Ric, the world can’t stop just because you’re an accidental psycho killer.”

~  I like seeing the gradual evolution of Stefan trying to better himself again and I am glad that it is Damon who is helping him. It’s clear as day that Stefan needs to some serious Tough Love and Damon’s the right person to give it to him.
