Vampire Diaries Review: Season Three Season Premiere: The Birthday

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.

Good God I am so happy this show is back. After making myself suffer through that horrible season of True Blood, I was so happy to see that The Vampire Diaries has still gotten it right.

The Vampire Diaries has been on the air for two seasons now but in actuality the series has only just begun. And let me tell you something: it is awesome. After a 4 month agonizing summer hiatus, The Vampire Diaries came roaring back with a premiere episode that may have been the series best episode to date. It wasn’t as fast and high stakes as many of the season two episodes were but it was way more balanced and emotional than ever before.

So for this season I am going to do my reviews a little differently this time around. Last season I only wrote a review for like half of the full 22 episodes and I don’t want that to be the case this year.  Instead of me draining myself over how I am going to write a long review, I am going to keep it simple this year by writing what I believed to be my top 5 favorite moments from the episode. Let me tell you there were a lot of great moments in this episode and I found it hard to just keep track of 5. But nonetheless here they are!

Jeremy and Matt are going to make for a great Bromance: Jeremy is still seeing Vicki and Anna’s ghosts. It’s freaking him out so what does he do? He hides it from everyone he knows and smokes more pot. Then he lets Matt join in on the fun and tells him about seeing Vicki’s ghost. Their scenes together were hilarious and heartfelt and I have a feeling that these two are going to make for an awesome Bromance and hey, it finally gives Matt something to do! Which I am more than happy about because his kind of beauty shouldn’t be wasted!

They TORTURED poor Simon Camden: One of the craziest shockers of the night was the torture of werewolf Ray Sutton, who was played by David Gallagher (who was Simon Camden on 7th Heaven!) Klaus has a new mission now that he is a full on hybrid. He wants to create an army of hybrids. So he and Stefan spent the majority of the episode tracking down Ray Sutton and torturing him to find out the whereabouts of Ray’s pack. Then Klaus forcefeeds Ray his blood and then snaps his neck. Yeah I think it’s safe to say that poor Simon Camden is going to make a transformation into Happy (for those of you who may not know, Happy was the Camden’s family dog.) Anyways, I can’t wait. I have been dying to see David Gallagher back on TV and I am thrilled that he is on this show! Can’t wait to see more!

Stefan is The Rippppah: Did anyone else yell out a huge holy f*ing sh*t when Damon told Alaric “There is a reason they call [Stefan] ‘The Ripper.’ Feeds so hard he blacks out, rips ‘em apart. But when he’s done, he feels remorse. It’s the damndest thing: He puts the bodies back together.” Just then Damon knocks over the pretty little decomposing blonde’s head to the carpet. Ummmmm OK! DAMN ! Stefan you are a crazy one! I mean WOW. I knew that we were going to see a different side of Stefan but HOLY SHIT! The transformation that Stefan has made is quite remarkable. The Stefan we saw in this episode was so cold and calculating, there was an emptiness that we haven’t seen before. It was haunting yet mesmerizing at the same time and Paul Wesley played it beautifully. I seriously can’t wait to see what Kevin Williamson and Julie Pelc have in store for us next!

FORWOOD FOR THE WIN! After making us wait a whole season to see these to finalllly get it on; we get the mother (pun intended) of all pay offs. How hot was that sex scene? Honestly I couldn’t have asked for more. These two have such amazing chemistry and I am so glad that TVD is finally using it to its fullest potential!

And, how about that final scene with Caroline and Mrs. Lockwood? Why is it that Caroline is the one who always ends up hurt in the premieres? She doesn’t have the best luck does she? Anyways, they’ve finally set up the whole Romeo and Juliet theme quickly and I for one can’t wait! I love these two and I hope we get to see more awesomeness from them throughout all of season three!!

That phone call.  “I love you, Stefan. Hold onto that. Never let that go.”

I am going to go out on a leap here and say that 2nd to last scene with Stefan calling Elena may be just as good as the Desmond and Penny phone call scene from The Constant. Yes I just went there.

It’s taken me awhile to come to this because for the longest time I was conflicted about who I wanted Elena to be with but I think after seeing the scenes they shared together from The Last Day and last night’s phone call, I am going to stay that for now I am 95% Team Stefan.  The love that these two have for each other is so raw and real that its heartbreaking. Stefan is struggling to hold on to whatever last ounce of humanity he has left in him and with the help of Elena and Damon’s love I believe he will be able to hold on to it.

So there it is! The first episode of season three completed! So happy that this show is finallllly back on air. I have missed it dearly and I missed getting to write about it weekly! And again, I would just like to thank Paul Wesley for his utter awesomeness in this episode. I have a feeling that this is his year and I for one couldn’t be happier!

  1. Omg, I totally didn’t realize that the werewolf was Simon Camden! All that beard! I loved 7’th heaven. Great show! Fun to see little simon again 😀

I loved the episode. I loved seeing Stefan being so bad.. and that phone call in the end, that was just the swetest thing. Not on the same level as Desmond/Penny (btw, thank you, I now have to go watch Lost from the beginning. Again), I must say, but still very touching ;D
And the whole Jeremy thing, that is just.. wild. Can’t wait to find out more about that!
