Modern Family: Girl with the Negative Tattoo

Oh man I have missed this crazy Modern Family. Last night this year’s Emmy-winning series, for Best Comedy (HELL YEAH!!), Modern Family premiered their second season. Phil tried to save the families old station wagon, Jay said that working construction with Mitchell was worse than Vietnam. Then Mitchell tries to prove his dad and Cameron wrong but ends up getting stuck in a princess castle. Manny meets a girl his own age who is very controlling and nearly gives Gloria a heart attack. I love this show.

A lot was revealed in this episode about our favorite family. We learned that Phil is actually a pretty good salesman, after Claire insists they have to sell the old station wagon they haven’t used in years. She doesn’t think he can do it. But come on, this is Phil we’re talking about. We then learn that Phil uses mnemonic devices to remember the names of people, including the buyer: “he looked like the drummer from foreigner. A foreigner is from France. France rhymes with ants. Ants ruin a picnic. What’s up Nick?” Anyways, Phil takes the family on one last family ride in the old wagon but then Luke needed to throw up and they all get out of the car, forgetting to put the parking break on and of course the car ends up falling off a cliff.

Mitchell and Cameron have decided to build Lily a princess castle. We learn that Mitchell is not very good with power tools or at construction for that matter. Cameron fears for his life. So when Jay comes over and offers to help, they try to make Mitchell do other things so the castle doesn’t get screwed up. Mitchell catches on, tries to prove them wrong, and gets stuck in the Princess castle.

Then there is Gloria and Manny. We learn that Gloria is a very protective mother and doesn’t want to see her Manny find another woman. She can’t let go. When Manny brings over a girl from school, Kelly, and she refuses Gloria’s empanadas because theres too many trans-carbs and then challenging Gloria’s chocolate milk saying its better with a pinch of salt, we see Gloria’s green eyes come out. She is not happy that her Manny has found a new woman that is not her. One of the best lines of the night:

Manny: “Kelly’s moving her stuff into my notebook.”

Kelly: “It just felt right.”

I don’t think there is going to be a sophomore slump when it comes to this show. They pretty much have next years Emmys locked in the bag. This show is just so witty, clever, and down right hilarious. I just can’t wait to see what’s in store next.

Other great lines:

Phil: “Wow, this place has really changed. Time marches on, huh? See that Starbucks down there, you know what that used to be?”
Luke: “An orange grove?”
Phil: “No, a Burger King. You can still see some of the architecture

Jay: “That was my Vietnam — and I was in Vietnam” describing building a bookshelf with Mitchell.

Cameron: “If an accident does happen, I hope he kills me, because I don’t think I would be a very inspiring disabled person.” – dreading home improvement with Mitchell.

“In my culture, mothers are very clingy to their sons. In fact, the leading cause of death among Colombian women is when their sons get married. But I’m not like that.” –Gloria
